Canaan Valley Institute Property Construction Projects

CVI's newly constructed Research and Education Center

Introduction
In April 2008, Canaan Valley Institute (CVI) completed the first of three construction projects located on a portion of its 3,223 acre property. The 3,700 square foot Research Support Building (RSB) was completed by the construction contractor, Manheim Corporation. J.F. Allen Company completed access roadways and utility installations for the RSB and onward to the Research and Education Center site. Both buildings were designed to blend with the existing landscape and are registered projects under the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

Both construction projects complied with various applicable federal statutes, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969. Because of the scope of CVI's projects, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was warranted. To assist with this effort, Mackin Engineering of Pittsburgh, PA, was hired to complete the final study. A Record of Decision (ROD) was issued June 1, 2006, finalizing the NEPA process.

CVI's website serves as an archvie for information pertaining to CVI construction projects, including documents filed in compliance with NEPA, information about public meetings, and other activities.

CVI Sustainable Building Policy
CVI is committed to environmental, economic, and social stewardship and to protecting, conserving, and enhancing Mid-Atlantic Highlands natural resources. Therefore, it is the policy of CVI to design, construct, manage, and maintain its facilities in a sustainable manner by applying the US Green Buildings Council’s LEED rating system. CVI will demonstrate sustainable building practices by achieving certified LEED ratings for new construction. New construction projects will exhibit the responsible use of all forms of energy and materials and be in harmony with the natural features and resources surrounding them.

CVI STAFF TOUR NEW FACILITY:

Dan Wheeler, CVI Construction Manager, provided a guided tour to CVI employees, following the March 30, 2009, staff meeting. This was the employees' first look inside CVI's Research and Education Center. The building components and sustainable design features made for a truly enjoyable tour.
